Developement and activity:

Gustaaf

Last night I was watching Humberto Tan’s RTL Late Night. Guus Meeuwis was one of his guests and he was talking about this pop up restaurant he was going to open in Tilburg. My mother told me something about this restaurant as well since she’s a big fan of Guus Meeuwis. I wondered why he as a famous Dutch singer would do this so I searched for more information.

What

This restaurant will pop up for 5 days in the Piushaven at the Falcon cmplx in Tilburg. This means that after five days the restaurant will disappear again. The restaurant will be openend during from the 5th of February until the9th of February. Lunch will be served at 12 a.m. for 40 euros and dinner is served at 5 p.m. for 75 euros excluded of drinks. He’s running this restaurant with Dick Middelweerd who’s the owner of a two Michelin- star for his restaurant De Treeswijkhoeve. The reason they open this restaurant is because it’s been twenty years since Guus Meeuwis had his breakthrough with his song ‘Het is een Nacht’ and his first yearly concert Groots met een zachte G started ten years ago so this is his jubilee year. The profits they make go to the charity Muziekkids. This organization supports children who are in hospital with music in the Netherlands.

Why

This concept is cool because it can relate to a bunch of trends. For example collaborative creativity. This trend refers to the collaboration between Guus Meeuwis and Dick Middelweerd. Guus said it was a dream to once open a restaurant but that it was impossible because of his schedule. They mix Guus’ creativity and concept thinking together with Guus’ creativity and expertise in food. Als cool giving relates to the Gustaaf Restaurant. Guus’ combines his jubilee year which will be celebrated in many ways, for example a concert in the Royal Albert Hall and an album with a big band, with a charity for kids. In this way he brings a lot of attention to this charity because he will give a lot of money since the reservations for the restaurant are enormous and people will notice the charity. The trends collaborative creativity and cool giving were forms of micro trends. Of course this restaurant belongs to the sector of leisure. Fans of Guus Meeuwis will try to eat at this restaurant but also people who are interested in restaurants with Michelin- star chefs. This is a good example of experience economy. You experience the vision of Guus Meeuwis’ look on food and enjoying a restaurant. Also you can eat affordable food which is made by a Michelin chef which usually is very expensive. Further you support a charity for children by eating, which is fun and you feel good about it. Going to this restaurant will create a memorable experience. It’s something people will tell their kids about later  for example or their grandchildren that they ate at Guus Meeuwis’ restaurant which was only there for 5 days.

Piaggio E- bike

While reading the Dagblad de Limburger I saw a cool- looking bike. What I found interesting was that this bike was produced by the parent company of Vespa, Piaggio. The Vespa scooters are extremely popular in the Netherlands and other countries around the world. In the Netherlands cycling is an obligation for some, but most enjoy their time cycling around. For those who need an electrical bike it can be quite difficult to buy one because they have to admit they’re no longer capable of cycling on their own power anymore. The battery’s on these bikes are centre of attention, the designs are ugly… but let’s look at the Piaggio Electric Bike Project.

What

The motor and the battery were both produced by Piaggio Group, a company that is specialized building motors for for example scooters. The motor doesn’t work when you disconnect the bikes display, this avoids theft. Also GPS is installed within the battery. You can track down your bike when it has been stolen and it sends data to your smartphone, for example when your battery is low after disuse. The Piaggio Multimedia Platform technology makes it possible to change your level of assistance anytime you want. Also you can give commands to your bike using voice control, the handlebar or your smartphone application. Using the display you can also charge your smartphone and upload data, for example music. The Smart Navigator on this bike analyses routes when you plan them. Through searches on the internet the Smart Navigator can give you information on for example road work and how much battery you need to travel or at what maximum speed to get back home. The Italian design of the bike is made of light weighted aluminium. The price of this electrical bike will be around 2500 euros.

Why

I thought this bicycle fitted in the leisure theme because cycling is something a lot of people enjoy doing these days. The use of an electrical bicycle becomes more populair these days. The trend of paying attention to your body makes everyone of every age moving. And the coolness within this bike lies in the endless hightech functions and options it has to work on your body. Also the Italian luxury design stands out from other electrical bikes which makes it interesting for those who don’t like the typical dull electrical bikes. . The group Piaggio focusses on is not the elderly who are in physical need of a bike like this. They focus on those who want to take time and enjoy their bicycle ride, experience the ride. Those who actually find it important to enjoy the little things in life and experience new things rather then doing what’s normal.

Fogo Island Inn

ganj_1306ontheedgeoftheworld1

I read the November’s issue of Elle Magazine once again because my father found an interesting article on a hotel in Canada on a lonely island. We’ve made a one month trip to Canada several years ago so we were both very interested in this article. The article mainly focused on the relaxation on this location but I was very interested in the strange building and it’s beautiful surroundings so I did some further research on the internet.

What:

Fogo Island Inn is a hotel on the island of Fogo on the east coast of Canada, and has about 2500 inhabitants. The hotel was designed by Todd Saunders, a Canadian architect who’s mostly inspired by the Norwegian roughness. Wood is the main material that is used and together with the handcrafted interior by the locals it represents the Fogo culture. The rooms have windows that reach form floor to ceiling so you can experience the surroundings without going outside. The hotel consists of 5 flours with 29 rooms, a library, a lobby, a restaurant, a movie theatre, an art gallery and a sauna and spa. At the moment the hotel is a five star inn that was an idea of the Shorecast Foundation. This foundation was created by several important Fogo inhabitants that wanted to put Fogo back on the map without losing it’s identity.

Why:

This hotel is cool because it gives their guests a fresh perspective on life. Staying in this hotel and on this island, you will find your true self again. The island people show you that instead of wanting everything, it’s better to do with what you have. This has everything to do with the Experience Economy. These trips give your head space to think and rest. The combination of the rough and honest nature on this island and the lack of capitalistic inputs is rare in our world nowadays. The hotel is not the most important factor for this trip. Though the hotel offers a lot of luxury and cultural aspects, it’s the whole experience of the island that will affect your mindset. A trip to Fogo island would be interesting for those who have enough of our fast- spinning Western world. It could be a transforming experience, meaning that it van change your way of thinking or your behavior towards things. Another part of the Experience Economy that can absolutely be linked to the Fogo Island Inn is Authenticity. Fogo Island Inn gives you nothing but honesty. The real product they offer created by and for locals and guests is unique in many ways.

Lucy in the sky

Naamloos

While reading Elle Magazine I read this title this strange title ‘Lucy in the sky, Deventer, Nederland’, which reminded me of the Beatles’ song ‘Lucy in the sky with diamond’ which was a trigger big enough to read on. The strange building in the photograph made me curious so I read on.

What

Lucy in the sky is a single- room hotel which is a collaboration of architects and visual artists in the Netherlands. The founders of this company came up with the name ‘Lucy in the sky’ because they consider their hotels as diamond attached to buildings in the sky. At this point there are three Lucy’s in het Havenkwartier, Deventer: the Cube (shown above), the Glxy and the Pwr. The project started in 2011 and was realized at the beginning of 2014. A few years ago the Havenkwartier in Deventer needed new input. The city brought together some Dutch creatives to give this area new life. The Lucy’s can only be used by one or two persons each time. All the hotels contain a pantry, a small bathroom, bedroom and balcony. White is prominent color used inside and they use bedsheets that are produced by the Dutch Textile Museum Tilburg. The price of one night in a Lucy for one person is €150.

Why

These small hotels are cool because they are an eye-catcher in their industrial- surrounding. The whole idea behind these hotels is to experience pure luxury and quality time with your loved one. It’s an amazing experience to sleep in a piece of art and to have a unique view on an area you usually do not see in a hotel. The Havenkwartier is an area with a lot of industrial activities which still attract young urban creatives in the region. Although one might not quickly consider Deventer to spend some nights this location offers you a lot of new experiences. Lucy in the sky is a perfect example for the trend Experience Economy. Spending money and time on and amazing creative artistic experience that you don’t find elsewhere in this form and shape. You can call sleeping in a Lucy a memorable experience. It’s not something you do on a daily base and it is not something that will change your life but it is an experience you will remember though.
